Filmfare Awards Announced - Bollywood Shines

No surprises or major upsets were reported at the 49th Manikchand Filmfare awards on Feb 21 ’04. Alas, we weren’t there to see our favorite (and not so favorite) Bollywood heros and heroines get the nod but we did devour various news sources to keep you abreast of the latest filmfare news.

Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan were the big winners on the star studded glittery night, both winning the best actress and best actor’s role respectively at the 49th Filmfare Awards. While Zinta's feisty performance in Kal Ho Na Ho bagged her the title, Hrithik won for his role in Koi Mil Gaya.

Nominees for best actor were

Amitabh Bacchan – Baghban
Hrithik Roshan - Koi… Mil Gaya
Salman Khan - Tere Naam
Shah Rukh Khan - Kal Ho Naa Ho
Mr Shatrughan Sinha presented the award to Hrithik Roshan. Hrithik thanked his Mom, Dad and wife Suzanne.

Nominees for Best Actress
Bhoomika Chawla - Tere Naam
Hema Malini - Baghban
Preity Zinta - Kal Ho Naa Ho
Preity Zinta - Koi… Mil Gaya
Rani Mukerji - Chalte Chalte
Urmila Matondkar - Bhoot
Rekha and Karan Johar gave away the award to Preity Zinta who dedicated it to her mom.

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
Tere Naam
Winner – Koi Mil Gaya
Arjun and Esho Deol presented the award to Rakesh Roshan for Koi Mil Gaya.

Critics Award for Best Actress went to Urmila Matondkar for her work in ‘Bhoot’ and Hrithik bagged The Critics Award for Best Actor .

Nomination for Best Actress in a supporting role.

Shabana Azmi – Tehzeeb
Shehnaz Treasurywala - Ishq Vishk
Jaya Bacchan won the award and commented that she loved being Preity’s mom in Kal ho na ho.
Nominees for Best Actor in a supporting role
Abhishek Bachchan - Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon
Arshad Warsi - Munna Bhai M.B.B.S
Manoj Bajpai - LoC-Kargil
Saif Ali Khan - Kal Ho Naa Ho
Salman Khan - Baghban
The winner was Saif Ali Khan for ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’

Nominees for the Best Actor in a Comic Role
Boman Irani - Munna Bhai M.B.B.S
Johny Lever - Koi… Mil Gaya
Paresh Rawal - Fun2ss
Paresh Rawal - Hungama
Sanjay Dutt - Munna Bhai M.B.B.S
The award for the Best Actor in a Comic Role was given to Sunjay Dutt for Munnabhai MBBS.

Best Female Debut Award was given to Lara Dutta and Priyanka Chopra for Andaaz.

The Best Lyrics Award was given to Javed Akhtar for Kal ho Na Ho from the film Kal Ho Naa Ho.
The Best Music award went to Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy for Kal Ho Na Ho

Alka Yagnik - Odhni odhke (Tere Naam)
Alka Yagnik - Tauba tumhare (Chalte Chalte)
Chitra - Koi mil gaya (Koi… Mil Gaya)
Shreya Ghoshal - Jadoo hai nasha hai (Jism)
Shreya Ghoshal won the award for her flawless rendition of for Jadoo hai nasha hai from the film ‘ Jism’

Nominees for Best male playback singer
Abhijeet - Suno na (Chalte Chalte)
Kumar Sanu - Kissi se tum pyar karo (Andaaz)
Sonu Nigam - Kal ho na ho (Kal Ho Naa Ho)
Udit Narayan - Idhar Chala (Koi… Mil Gaya)
Udit Narayan - Tere naam (Tere Naam)
Sonu Nigam for title song of Kal Ho Na Ho. Sonu was the favorite this year for this award anyway.

Best Art Direction award - Minish Sapal for Pinjar
Best Action Award - Mr Amit for Qayamat
Best Cinematographer award - Asim Bajaj for Chameli
Best Editing Award - Shimit Amin for Bhoot

Background score - Mr Viren Shah
Best Dialogue - Abbas Tyrewala for Munnabhai MBBS
Best Screenplay for 2003 - Rajkumar Hirani & Vidhu Vinod Chopra for Munnabhai MBBS.
Best story - Nagesh Kukunoor for Teen Deewarein. Said Mr. Kukunoor “For all the kids like me who grew up watching the awards, this lady (award) will look good on my mantle piece”
Best Choreography - Farah Khan for ‘Idhar Chala Mein Udhar Chala’ (Koi Mil Gaya)
