The full-moon day of the month of Shraavana has been declared as â€œVishwa Samskruta Dinam” - World Sanskrit Day. The Greater Boston Chapter of Samskrita Bharati USA will be celebrating Vishwa Samskrita Dinam this year on Saturday, June 17th starting at 4 PM, and is delighted to invite you to join in a sandhya (evening) filled with Samskrutam (the Sanskrit language) and samskriti (culture). The evening will include an entertainment program consisting of skits, songs, presentations and more, all in Sanskrit, by a group of Sanskrit enthusiasts, both children and adults, from the Greater Boston area. The event also doubles up as the annual day of the Sanskrit schools run by Samskrita Bharati in the area. The event is free and open to all, and will be followed by dinner.

SANSKRIT

Sanskrit, which is often called “deva-bhaashaa” (देवभाषा) or the language of the Gods, is a storehouse of Indian wisdom and knowledge transmitted down over the centuries. The great works in the Indian spiritual tradition such as the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatham, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and the Vedas are in Sanskrit. Knowing Sanskrit allows you to study, understand, interpret and appreciate these works yourself. Sanskrit is a scientifically designed language - in fact “Samskrutam”, the Sanskrit word for Sanskrit means “well-constructed”. The great Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo says “Sanskrit language, as has been universally recognized by those competent to form a judgement, is one of the most magnificent, the most perfect, the most prominent and wonderfully sufficient literary instrument developed by the human mind.”  Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, asserts in his “Discovery of India” (video link) – “If I was asked, what is the greatest treasure which India possesses, and what is her finest heritage, I would answer unhesitatingly that it is the Sanskrit language and literature and all that it contains.”
