Rāga Rang - Unique, Melodious, Transformative

One more day for a very unique program that all of New England eagerly awaits. For these past five years, spring has become synonymous with invigorative and generative music. From the discerning connoisseur to those who simply move to the grove of sublime music, Rāga Rang represents an anthem. More than a simple musical performance, Meru’s unique approach makes this an entertaining, educating experience. The ripples of which linger long after spring gives way to the heat of summer and into the cold months until the thaw of yet another spring brings fresh showers. What we have for you this year is a journey that takes inspiration from creation itself.

The entire universe, with all its beings and things, emerges from the elements. Space, air, fire, water and earth, the pillars of srishti - emergence. These elements are in everything we touch. Even humans, just as we draw in prāņa - life, to become a prāņi, alive, we draw in the essence of the elements to create an inner microcosm. An artist can take such mundane experiences and transform them into compelling roopa - forms. From these forms, a skilled musician can construct a musical grammar, using which, he can deftly and playfully explore the many nuances of music.

Image a scene where we absorb sound that we hear all around us. We then organize this as poetry, an expression of thoughts and emotions. We arrange this with the necessary musical decoration and as it permeates through space and reaches the the shrota the connoisseur, the vibrations generate a unique rasa. What then do you think happens?

This edition of Rāga Rang explores the generation of this transformative rasa, taking inspiration from creation itself.

A Journey in search of the soul of melody.
