The Orissa Society of New England (OSNE) partnered with Thirve and turned its annual Diwali party into a fundraising event to support development efforts in the tribal areas of Orissa. The party, held at Milan restaurant on Friday, Nov 6th was a sold out event. As the evening progressed, extra chairs had to be brought in to accommodate the attendees that numbered over 275.

“OSNE usually has an annual Diwali event. This year we decided to partner with Thrive and make it a fundraising event, with the hope of doing some good while having a good time” said Pradeep Dhal, President of OSNE.

Middle and high schoolers from Lexington, Burlington, Watertown and Westford started the evening off with a variety show that included a medley of classical, folk and film dances. This was followed by a short speech by Thrive volunteer, Amaresh Mahapatra who took a few moments to share his experience in Orissa at the Thirve projects. The attendees took to the dance floor and danced the night away to the popular tunes played by DJ Hitesh Punjabi. Mehendi ,jewelery, face painting and other stalls added to the festive atmosphere. The food catered by Milan was excellent and sumptuous.

“I thank all of you for coming all the way on a Friday evening to help raise funds for Thrive. We are touched by the support and excited by the probable outcomes that will arise for the women and children of THRIVE as a result of this event. We are pleased to note that we have grossed about $7000 at this event ” said Monalisa Patnaik the founder of Thrive. Patnaik deserves congratulations for coordinating this special event. Her personal welcome to every one of the attendees added a special touch and her attention to detail ensured the event's success.

This event was very symbolic of Diwali which is the "Festival of Lights". The atmosphere at Milan was certainly festive and we hope that the funds raised will light new lamps of development in the Tribal Villages of Orissa.
