03/30/2017

Health is Wealth Foundation launches 1st Carlisle Badminton Tournament with players 7 to 70!

Health is Wealth Foundation, founded in 2003, advocates and organizes activities which are important for our health.  It promotes health-related education for prevention and treatment of diseases.  In case of illness, it also helps needy individuals in paying for their copayments/deductible and for their treatments.

Purnima, MD, Foundation Founder, a retired Robotic minimally invasive Gyn surgeon, is an expert in both women’s health issues and obesity. She was diagnosed with Leukemia-Lymphoma in 2002, yet through her challenges, she continues to live a life focused on physical fitness, Saatvik nutrition and mind-body measures. Through her foundation, she also promotes these practices for keeping the mind and body healthy and joyful.

Dr. Purnima, a Carlisle resident, joined the Carlisle Badminton Club, a 16-year-old-program, in 2016.  In her typical style of always moving forward with courage and commitment, saw an opportunity to work with Carlisle Recreation Department and Old Home Day to launch this tournament. As one of the fastest sports, Badminton combines agility, speed, stamina, and coordination into one demanding discipline. Doug Deyoe, leader of the Carlisle Badminton Club, expressed extreme enthusiasm and volunteered to take over the responsibility to organize the tournament. The tournament kicks off in April 2017 and ends on June 24th   at the Carlisle Public School Gym. Doug shares – “it is a wonderful opportunity to bring people together from different cultures, fitness and skill levels around Badminton”. He has is planning the details with other Club members, Pao Chi, Anh Ngo, Jean Patel-Bushnell and John Chao. For more tournament details please contact Doug at ddvader1@gmail.com.

Already 62 players have signed up with the cutoff date of March 30th when registration closes. Registration costs $5 and comes with a branded T-shirt. Registered players will be randomly assigned a partner for each division. At minimum there is a Men’s Division Doubles, a Women’s Division Doubles and Mixed doubles.  Finals on June 24th will run from 12.30 to 4 PM with prizes for top contenders in different divisions and BaroMatrix, LLC will serve healthy BaroFit snacks and sports drinks. The event is also supported by Carlisle Recreation Department, Old Home Day, Northeast Clothing & Apparel and many volunteers.

For Dr. Purnima this is another dream project coming through. She is already brainstorming ways to take the 2018 tournament to the next level.  She states that one of her favorite quotes is by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India in Wings of Fire: An Autobiography, “Dream is not that which you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep.”
