Cambridge City To Hold First Ever Diwali Celebrations

Press Release
10/20/2016

CAMBRIDGE TO HOLD DIWALI CELEBRATION ON OCTOBER 30, 2016

In keeping with the city’s reputation as a community that continually seeks ways to promote and celebrate its rich diversity, the Mayor’s Office, in partnership with City Councilor Nadeem Mazen, shall be hosting the first ever Citywide celebration of Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, on Sunday, October 30, 2016, from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, at the Citywide Senior Center, located at 806 Massachusetts Avenue. This event is free and open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend.

Diwali is celebrated primarily in India and other South East Asian communities, yet its themes of rebirth and rejuvenation, and the triumph of light over darkness, are universal themes that can be embraced by all. The City of Cambridge is drawing upon the traditional Diwali celebrations held in India by featuring music, food, and the celebration of community.

Cambridge residents of all faiths and denominations are encouraged to come to the Cambridge Senior Center on October 30 to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Diwali celebration, and to launch what is hoped to be just the first of many annual Diwali celebrations. The event shall consist of a brief speaking program, music, and other performances, and light refreshments shall be served.

For more information about this event, please contact Deputy Chief of Staff Muna Kangsen in the Mayor’s Office at mkangsen@cambridgema.gov. To volunteer at this event, please contact Rupal Shah at RupalRShah@aol.com.
