Kasim And Babu Brothers Present Nadhaswaram Concert

MITHAS (MIT Heritage Arts of South Asia), a well-known organization that takes pride in bringing quality South Asian music, musicians, and arts from across the globe to Boston since 1993, presented the front-ranking Nadhaswaram artists from, Andhra Pradesh, India to the music lovers of Greater Boston area. On Sunday, Sep 25, 2016 from 04:00pm to 8:00pm, Shri S. Kasim and Shri S. Babu Brothers offered one-of-a-kind performance at MIT Wong Auditorium, Cambridge, MA. Hundreds of beautifully dressed audience assembled at the auditorium to relish the melodious duet Nadhaswaram Carnatic by eminent Shri Kasim-Babu Brothers.

Shri Kasim-Babu Brothers were welcomed warmly along with the audience to event. Their brief but great introduction was given to audience. The Brothers hail from Karavadi Village of Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh. They belong to a great family of musicians, which preserved and fostered the art of Nadhaswaram by playing it from generation to generation continuously for the past 300 years, in Andhra Pradesh. These blood brothers had a rare opportunity of getting trained in this Carnatic style at a very young age and by their own maternal grandfather and Guru, Dr.Sheik Chinna Moulana. These brothers also played with Dr.Sheik Chinna Moulana for many years in many music concerts held throughout India and abroad. The brothers are not only renowned for their mastery and in-depth knowledge of this particular style of music but also for being the torch bearers of Shri Chinna Moulana family’s music tradition. They are continuing and fostering gracefully and elegantly their family music lineage by training their children.

Kasim is a physics graduate from the prestigious St. Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli. It seems, as if he uses the principles of physics and math for the emergence of his music. With the refinement and loveliness he plays Nadhaswaram along with his brother Babu is fascinating and the lively sound that peers through the ears and into the space beyond. Kasim and Babu have played together all over the world since 1992 and have received many honors and awards. Kasim and Babu run a musical school namely “Saradha Nadhaswaram Sangeetha Ashram” founded by Dr. Sheik Chinna Moulana, with the main objective of imparting Nadhaswaram training to younger generation and also provide free training on the intricate nuances of different ragas. Their “Dr. Chinna Moulana Memorial Trust” is globalizing the importance of Nadhaswaram Music and presenting Nadhaswaram instruments to deserving students and senior indigent artists of the Nadhaswaram fraternity.

The Brothers are renowned for both the raga alapana and Kriti in Gayaki style. Here are some of the songs they played for the audience as some of the audience were murmuring the songs: Mallari in ragam Gambeera Naatai; Tatvamariya in Ragam Reetigowlai; Hiranmayeem Lakshimeeem in Ragam Lalitha; Ranganayakam in ragam Nayaki; Ragam Hemavathi; bhOginDra Shayinam in Ragam Kuntalavarali; Aarabhimaanam in ragamalika; Sri Raghuvara in ragam Kamboji; Visweswara in ragam Sindhu Bhairavi; Kurai Ondrum Illai in ragamalika. They played very creatively and artistically a garland of ragas including arable, hamsadhwani, kalyani, anandhabhairavi, sama, saranga, mohanam, lalitha, darbar, kamalamanohari and poorivikalyani. Shri Kasim and Babu gave a consummate Nadhaswaram concert to audience. --- and ---Accompanied on tavil. They all together placed a final melodic insignia, and the concert ended.
