Harikatha Kalakshepam - Smt Savitri Jayanthi Enthralls

06/16/2016

The Boston Telugu Community organized the event Harikatha Kalakshepam, which was performed by the renowned artist Smt. Savitri Jayanthi on Friday, June 10, 2016, at the New England Shirdi Sai Parivar Temple, Chelmsford.  Around 75 devotees and art lovers attended this enthralling and enlightening event.  Harikatha is a unique kind of story telling that integrates poetry, music, dance, and drama to effectively deliver a religious discourse.

Smt. Jayanthi Savithri is an engaging Bhagavatharini (Harikatha artist) of TTD propagating the "Pada Kavithas" of Annamacharya in the form of Harikatha. She had the audience spell-bound with her narration of the story of Sri Bhakta Rama Dasu.  She provided insights into Sri Rama Dasu's childhood, his strong devotion to Lord Sri Rama from a very tender age, employment as tehsildar for Tane Shah, use of tax money to rebuild and restore honor and grandeur to Lord Sri Rama's temple in Bhadrachalam, subsequent incarceration for 12 years, release coordinated by Lord Sri Rama himself, and his eventual attainment of moksha.  She interspersed the narrative with chosen poems from Dasarathi Satakam written by Sri Rama Dasu and sang many of the famous kirtanas written by the famous vaggeyakara.  The audience joined in with rhythmic clapping and chanting at regular intervals.  At the conclusion of this event, Smt. Savitri Jayanthi was felicitated by volunteers and friends while a grateful audience looked on.  The prasadam was prepared by volunteers and was served to all the attendees. Organizers thanked TAGB, Jet USA New England, NESSP for their support .
