IARI Attends International Day Of Peace Resolution At RI State Assembly

Press Release
06/07/2016

India Association of Rhode Island attends
International Day of Peace Resolution at RI State Assembly

India Association of Rhode Island (IARI) members attended a session at the RI State Assembly where International Day of Peace Resolution was passed. While the official day is September 21, 2016, the resolution passed by the assembly represents elite forward thinking of not only the representatives but also of the people of Rhode Island to promote peace and non-violence.

The International Day of Peace official site states the following:

International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by resolution 36/37, the United Nations General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. Furthering the Day’s mission, the General Assembly voted unanimously in 2001 to adopt resolution 55/282 establishing 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease- fire.

Anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon, sitting in silent meditation, or doing a good deed for someone you don’t know. Or it can involve getting your co-workers, organization, community or government engaged in a large event. You can also share thoughts, messages and pictures to commemorate Peace Day on social media. Use this site to find organized events in your area and for inspiration on celebrating Peace Day in your own way. (http://internationaldayofpeace.org)

India Association of Rhode Island (IARI) recently opened Mahatma Gandhi Cultural Center (MGCC) at Saints Sahag & Mesrob Armenian Church, 70 Jefferson Street, Providence, RI 0290to not only teach our children our cultural traditions but also to promote peace and non-violence. As Mahatma Gandhi taught, we believe all the issues and conflicts can be resolved by peace and non-violence. So it is only fitting that we attend the RI State Assembly session when the Peace Day resolution is introduced. We thank House Minority office and Representative Mr. Robert B. Lancia for doing all the legwork and helping us with passing of the resolution. From IARI the following members were present: Tushar and Mona Patel, Amrut and Dina Patel, Santosh Behera, Nikita Punjwani and Ashish Pathak.
