COMPANY, Music Review

Chitra Parayath
//

Ram Gopal Varma’s much awaited new film, ‘Company’ has many noted actors in its roster. It has Ajay Devgun ,the Southern superstar, Mohan Lal, Manisha Koirala, Seema Biswas( Bandit Queen, Jungle etc), Antara mali , Nisha Koppikar and Vivek Oberoi( son of Suresh Oberoi), making his acting debut.

Sandeep Chowta directs the musical score for this film. He seems to be a Verma staple, they have worked together in Kaun,Satya, Mast and Jungle.

'Khallas' (and it's Remix) by Asha Bhonsle, Sudesh Bhonsle and Sapna Awasthi is reminiscent of RD Burman’s style, the composition and lyrics are interesting at best . Nitin Raikwar seems to be the hot lyricist these days.

Altaf Raja’s ‘Tumse Kitna’ pleases with its earnestness, he is a singer sure to do well if given the right breaks. The lyrics are by Taabish Romani. ‘Pyaar pyaar mein’ sung very well by Sonali vajpaye and Babul Supriyo is your usual Bollywood love ditty, lacking imagination or the Chowta touch but it does make for easy listening. The two melodies are mellow and soft.

The surprise package here is Sowmya Rao, who sings “Aankhon Mein’ with very little instrumental accompaniment, lending the song a minimalist touch, very welcome and pleasing. This Ghazal is penned by Taabish.

‘Ganda hai’ , performed by Chowta himself is puzzling, the lyrics are hard to grasp and the music is experimental. That said ,the track gets interesting with repeated hearing. Supposed to be a narration of the goings on in the Mumbai underground, it charms because it is quite different from you’re the usual Hindi filmi numbers!

'A Shot Of Company' - The Law and Order Theme and 'Malik's Soul' - Instrumental , background music is passable . ‘Company” is not Chowta’s best but it is worth a try.

Incidentally,the young Chowta has his hands full with many projects, among them are Deepa Mehta's ‘Hollywood Bollywood’, , Sangeet Sivan's ‘Sandhya’, , Raj Kumar Kohil's ‘Jaani Dushman’, E Niwas' ‘Dam’ and Rajat Mukherjee's ‘Road’
