The MIT Ohms, MIT’s only South Asian fusion a capella group, performed their unique mashups of American pop and Hindi songs during Ohmception, their Spring Concert on May 1. Interspersed with “punny” skits following an Inception theme, the concert was a fun, high-energy performance showcasing the musical talents of these creative students. Both the group’s technical skill and imaginative arrangements impressed the audience from start to finish. The songs spanned every genre, from pop hits, to rock, to hip-hop to Bollywood. ‬‬‬

Galliyan/Animals
Soloists: Sushrutha Reddy/Tejas Sundaresan‬
The concert opened with a combination of two very popular songs, Galliyan from Ek Villain and Animals by Maroon 5. Soloists Sushrutha Reddy and Tejas Sundaresan impressed the audience with their energetic performances of the two difficult songs.
‬
‪Falling Slowly/Tum Ho Toh‬‬‬
Soloists: Vipul Vachharajani/Ayesha Bajwa/Rik Sengupta‬
The second song of the concert featured a beautiful mix of Falling Slowly and Tum Ho Toh from Rock On. Vipul Vachharajani and Ayesha Bajwa perfectly rendered the first song, which starts quietly and builds to a soaring chorus, while Rik Sengupta wowed with his impressive falsetto during the Hindi song.
‬
‪Hey There Delilah/Bas Main Aur Tu‬‬‬
Soloists: Abhijit Mudigonda/Rik Sengupta‬
The next piece was a sweet mix of two mellow, feel-good songs: Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T’s and Bas Main Aur Tu from Akash Vani, featuring soloists Abhijit Mudigonda and Rik Sengupta.
‬
‪Billie Tauba (Billie Jean/Tauba Tauba)‬‬‬
Soloists: Rupayan Neogy/Erica Liu/Giridhar Anand‬
Rupayan Neogy brought high energy to the next performance, a mash-up of Billie Jean and Tauba Tauba. Giridhar Anand complemented the Michael Jackson anthem with his skillful rendition of the upbeat Hindi song.
‬
‪Nothing Else Matters/Bheegi Bheegi‬‬‬
Soloists: Aritro Biswas/Suvinay Subramaniam/Sushrutha Reddy‬
The next piece, a mashup of Nothing Else Matters by Metallica and Bheegi Bheegi from Gangster, was particularly creative due to the similarities of the backgrounds, and soloists Aritro Biswas, Suvinay Subramaniam, Sushrutha Reddy ‬gave it a true rock-and-roll feel.
‬
‪Wait for It/Alvida‬‬‬
Soloists: Erica Liu/Tamanna Islam Urmi‬
The biggest surprise of the concert was the rendition of Wait for It, a song from the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton”, combined with Alvida from Life in a Metro. The Ohms did not disappoint and soloists Erica Liu and Tamanna Islam Urmi gave performances that were both spirited and soulful.
‬
‪Baina/Empire‬‬‬
Soloists: Suvinay Subramanian/Aishwarya Narayan‬
The highlight of the evening was an epic mashup of Baina and Empire, featuring two powerhouse soloists, Suvinay Subramanian and Aishwarya Narayan. The audience could feel the energy as all of the performers belted out the two songs.

The concert closed with an encore performance of a crowd favorite: a combination of Take me to Church by Hosier, Aao Na from the movie Haider, and Adele’s Skyfall. The group invited former members who were in attendance to join the performance. The Ohms also announced the release of their debut album "Resistance", available on CDbaby.com, where you can check out of some of the group's most popular songs over the last couple of years.
