Calcutta Club Second Annual South Asian Book Fair

Press Release
04/21/2016

Calcutta Club USA and The Boston Pledge will host the Sanskriti Book Fair and Theater on Sunday April 24th, at Thoreau School, Concord from 12 PM to 5 PM. All are welcome to this nostalgic event which uniquely brings together literature, art and theater within one venue, reconstructing the century old book fair that runs in Kolkata each January for 12 days.  Probably the only one of its kind in North America, the Calcutta Club book fair, which debuted last year, brings together established and emerging writers, the readership community, eminent speakers, playwrights and artists under the same roof to explore, mingle and exchange ideas.Along with invited speakers, who attend either in person or over video conference from another part of the world, there will be a plethora of new book releases in English, Hindi and Bengali that visitors can peruse and purchase. A key innovation of the book fair is the Authors Direct program - the popular platform for new writers to reach Boston's reading community leveraged by over 50 authors last year.

Our chief guest this year is the honorable ambassador of India Mr Arun Singh, who will be coming down from DC exclusively to attend the book fair.

Key speakers/panelists of this year include Dr Amit Chaudhuri, Dr Sam Pitroda, Shobhaa De, Manreet Sodhi Someshwar, Srijato Bandyopadhyay, Dr Vivek Bald and Dr Maina Singh.

The event will also present a short natyamela, with two well acclaimed plays - Dance Pe Chance (Bengali) by ECTA group of New Jersey and Sipahi Ki Ma, a Hindi drama by Hindi Manch of Boston. In between the plays, you will experience a story reading and poetry recital panel, with literary stars like Dr Sudipta Bhawmik, Dr Partha Banerjee, Sunayana Kachroo and several others. We may have a surprise guest artist at the commencement of the event at noon.

Delectable custom cuisine on the book fair floor will be provided by Chettinad Grill, who will extend its regular menu to offer Bengali flavor items like Kolkata street style rolls and malpoa, among other heartwarming delicacies.

This year, the club is excited to foster a growing collaboration with the organizers of the Jaipur Literary Festival, the largest book fair in the world drawing over a million footfalls every year.

Interested attendees are requested to register in advance, as the novel event can get sold out. To register, please visit www.eventedge.biz/sanskriti or call 508.740.7848. Information on the event can be found at www.calcuttaclubusa.com.
