KHMC (Karnatak Hindustani Music Circle) is a grassroots non-profit organization committed to preserving and propagating Indian Classical Music in the New England region. Started some 20 years ago by Dr. Suresh Mathur (a physics professor who taught at University of Massachusetts  for several decades and played baansuri (bamboo flute) for his hobby), KHMC hosted free Karnatak and Hindustani music performances by local students and teachers every other month at the homes of music loving families. Hot tea and snacks, pot luck dinners were shared during breaks between performances. The trend has continued for two decades and Indian classical music continues to be celebrated at homes of generous hosts in the New England region six times every year to this day.

KHMC attained the non-profit organization status due to Dr. Suresh Mathur's efforts a few years back with the support of local musicians and academicians  such as Dr. Pradeep Shukla, co-founder of Waltham based Learnquest Academy of Music among others.

Renowned Veena player Smt. Durga Krishnan who teaches at Learnquest Academy of music, at Chinmaya Mission in Andover and at her own school of music in Marlboro has played a key role in KHMC activities for several years. She will be felicitated along with Dr. Suresh Mathur at a free celebratory event to be held at Arthur Clark Government Center, 119 School St, Waltham on Saturday, April 23 at 4pm.

Local music teachers and students will present Karnatak and Hindustani vocal and instrumental recitals at the April 23 event. Tea and snacks will be available for purchase. The program is expected to last for two hours. All are welcome!
