Book About Mahavadhutham - Message Of The Great Avadhutha

It was in the year 1948, when the world was slowly forgetting the hard times of the Second World War. In a small princely state of Kochi, (South India) some fishermen cast their nets over the sea as usual, hoping for a good catch. And they did get one - a dark-skinned man covered in seaweeds and barnacles. This minimally clothed man with jatas (dreads) was taken to police custody, suspected to be a Japanese spy. And when questioned, he answered in all honesty about himself:
“Born in 1263 by the name of Prabhakaran, he claimed to be 658 years old. He has been living undersea for the last eleven years living on small fishes and seaweed. He lived continuously in The Himalayas for 400 years, a place now less frequented by him. He stayed in custody for a week during which he never ate or drank, nor passed urine or stool. Yet, this doesn't seem to affect him. The police are investigating about his whereabouts.”
(“658 year old yathivaryan in Mattancherry Police custody” Mathrubhumi. 08 June, 1948. Pg.5)

This man was an avadhutha. Avadhuthas are the ones who achieve enlightenment in its highest degree in their physical bodies, while they live detached to that body itself. They live in utter chaos, choosing to live without identity, or discipline practised known to us, sometimes talk gibberish or not talk at all, and or maybe even swear at the Gods while they are at it. Yet, they can exist as its exact opposite.

Another example of an avadhuta would be Naranathu Bhranthan, who rolled a huge boulder up a hill from dawn to dusk only to let it roll down the hill roaring with laughter and clapping hands. The reason behind this act was to tell the world that it takes a lot of time for an effort, and one moment to waste it. But, unfortunately he was perceived mad by the common folk, although he was revered for the knowledge he had.

Unpredictable and rare, these mystic saints generally avoid communication, cohabitation and correspondence with the dwellers of civilisation, to be absorbed completely in Brahmam, the Ultimate Truth. That’s where the journey of the book Mahavadhutham started – ‘Maha’ implying greatness, and ‘dhutham’ meaning message, thus meaning  ‘message of the great avadhutha’ (or a different way to enlightenment).

This project started over a year ago by an avadhuta’s disciple and a girl he found after fourteen years of long search. Including her mother, the trio had started living for this book that explores the lives of 21 avadhutas. During the initial 18 months, they put in all their investments for it, till all of their resources got exhausted. However, the completion of the book would require them to travel the whole of India (from Kanyakumari to the Himalayas) with a minimum estimated budget of 10 lakhs before the deadline of June, 2017. Now they are lookout for contributions from people who might be willing to support this cause they are doing for the world.
