PROBLEM # 1

In a town of 10,000 families it was found that 40% families buy newspaper A, 20% families buy newspaper B and 10% families buy newspaper C, 5% families buy A and B, 3% buy B and C and 4% buy A and C. If 2% families buy all 3 newspapers, find the number of families which buy (i) A only (ii) B only (iii) none of A, B and C.

PROBLEM # 2

The mean weight of 15 students is 112 lbs. The mean weight of 5 of them is 100 lbs and of another 3 is 125 lbs. What is the mean weight of the remaining students?

SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS ON 8/28/03

PROBLEM # 1

Joseph drove for 6 hours at an average speed of 44 mph. He drove 52 mph during the first two hours of his trip. How fast did she drive during the last 4 hours?

SOLUTION

44 x 6 = 52 x 2 + S x 4
S = 40 mph.

PROBLEM # 2

If Megan were three times as old as she was six years ago, she will be three more than two times her current age. How old is Megan?

SOLUTION

3(x-6)=2x+3
x = 21 years.
