SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS ON 8/14/03

PROBLEM # 1

Amy is twice as old as she was 10 years ago and Beth is half as old as she will be in 10 years. Who is older now? Amy or Beth?

SOLUTION

If Amy is x
x = 2(x-10)
x= 2x - 20
x = 20
Similarly Beth is now 10 and will be 20 in 10 years. So Amy is older now.

PROBLEM # 2

Aaron has 3 times as much money as Josh. If Aaron gives Josh $50, Josh will then have 3 times as much money as Aaron. How much money do two of them have together?

SOLUTION

If Josh has x:
x + 50 = 3 (3x-50)
x + 50 = 9x - 150
8x = 200
x = 25
So Josh has 25 and Aaron has 75. They both have a total of $100.00.
