In Conversation With Anitha Shetty

Nirmala Garimella
06/02/2015

Anitha Shetty has a bachelors degree in science and a masters in computer science from India. After coming to the US, she worked as a business analyst at various companies for 5 years and resigned in 2013 when she had her second child. During this break she finally made up my mind to pursue a career in event designing. To complement her natural abilities with some formal training, she  ompleted a certification course in wedding and event designing at  IWED (Institute of Wedding and Event Design) in 2014.

What prompted you to switch from a career to a business ? What acted as a catalyst?

My passion has always been arts, crafts and designing interesting things. I love beautiful decorations and when ever I got a chance I used to decorate and help my mom when she is performing any poojas. I always wanted to do something in this field and I choose event designing because I thought by abilities are best suited for this. It gives me an opportunity to express my thoughts using lots of different types fabrics, colors and flowers at a grand scale. I am always amazed with our indian weddings & events and how our rich culture is expressed in a beautiful way through colors, art and rich elements. I also felt our community needs help in this aspect. As busy working individuals we don’t get have time to plan, buy or do all the things ourselves and its pretty stressful to plan and execute an event whether its be a birthday party, sweet sixteen party or a wedding. I want to help the families in our communities with their decorations and make their memorable moments less stressful and more beautiful.

What is the unique aspect of your design and experience?

I would say the unique aspect of my design is that I focus on contemporary design with right amount of Indian flavor. I concentrate more on the elements and customer views when designing. I style an event with a creative concept taking all the things like the venue, outfits, themes and the type of event into consideration. I recently did a sweet sixteen party where I designed the theme, color scheme based on a beautiful lehnga that the birthday girl wore for the party.

What are the various services that  you offer?

We offer custom decorations for marriages, receptions, mehendi ceremonies, Birthdays, Sweet sixteens, Graduation parties, Baby showers, Cradle ceremonies,Saree functions, Pre wedding ceremonies and corporate events etc. We also provide Mandaps for marriages, furniture for the stage, lighting ,reception stages, center pieces, draping and flower arrangements

How has the community encouraged you or supported you in any way? Your past clients.

I can not thank the community enough for their support and encouragement. Our community has a great deal of confidence in me and my abilities. There were moments when I had self doubts about my ability to run a business, but the my friends, family and the extended community encouraged me to push forward and succeed. I hope to live unto their expectations
