SETU Presents Once Upon A Time Not In Bollywood

Press Release
04/23/2015

Come watch SETU’s new production: Once upon a time, NOT in Bollywood: an explosive play that explores the nuances of Indian politics while a parallel fantasy emerges through embedded Bollywood songs and dances. The protagonists Malati and Praveen are moderates who are trying to survive in a world dominated by extremist ideology on either end of the political spectrum and an ineffectual middle party that aims to incorporate everyone and pleases no one. What is the fate of Praveen and Malati’s budding college days’ romance? Praveen is harboring a deep secret: will that eventually catch up to him? Find out for yourself. Recreating all the exuberance and all the complexity that is modern India, this play will be as entertaining as it is thought provoking!

SETU, Stage Ensemble Theater Unit, Inc., is a 501 ( c ) (3) not-for-profit organization, founded in 2003. (www.setu.us)

Nilay Mukherjee writes enthusiastically about the process: What a blast it has been getting ready for OUTNOB! Coordinating forty actors and dancers through a tightly woven maze of scenes requires coordination on a scale that is complex even for SETU: but if anybody can do it, we can! Add in Indian nonchalance for strict rules ( rules are merely guidelines, aren't they?), friendly banter during complex dance routines and one part of your brain always thinking about the snacks that are just out of reach: and you have a feel for the all out dedication, focus and frivolity that will culminate       (last minute, of course) into a memorable show. Music, costumes, sets: it's all happening! Only the wild cast party is left out of the planning for now: there will be plenty of time for that later. Go SETU.
