Alisha Chinai, after a two year hiatus returns to the Indian pop scene with the self titled album 'Alisha'. Her two earlier albums 'Antaratma' and 'Dil ki rani' made no major waves and a lot seems to hinge on the success of this one.Teaming up with the new wiz kid on the block, Sandeep Chowta , she achieves some glory but not enough to redeem this collection.

The opening track "Seulement-Vous (Only You)", is passable and if it becomes widely played it'll owe its popularity to the racy video, shot expertly by Sanjay F. Gupta . This lavish video was shot in Las Vegas pubs and features a some talented latino dancers and even a snow tiger!

'Ishq Hai Ishq Se', written by Nitin Raikwar and Alisha is one of the best songs in the album and is reminiscent of her hits "Kambakth Ishq" and "Mast. Both Chowta and Alisha , allegedly, consider this the best song here.

The somber "Dilbar Jaaniya" starts off well enough but soon takes on filmi overtones . There is that delightful catch in her voice as she pines for love. 'Mashuka' is run of the mill and 'Wo pyaar mera' is not unique either. 'Bhangra fans will take to 'Soniya' a fast paced bhangra beat with Chowta's novel techniques saving it from utter mediocrity.

Alisha and Babul Supriyo sing the best duet song of this lack luster collection. 'Aayi teri yaad' . A soft ballad , penned by Nitin Raikwar is easy on the ears as is the other duet sung by Alisha and Chowta himself. 'Dhuan Dhuan' is exciting and new and this reviewer ,a avid tracker of Sandeep Chowta's work was quite taken in with the whole track.

That said, one has to wonder if there are still takers for songs like 'Don't want your love' ( written by Alisha and Shyam Anuragi and composed by Sanjeev Wadhwani) and ' Can you dance' ( written by Alisha and Nitin and composed by Alisha). There are so eighties and suffer from a stuffy Biddu hangover!

This album rates maybe a five out of possible ten points.
