Gul-o-Gulzar ~ A Musical Drama To Celebrate Bollywood Filmmaker Gulzar

Shekhar Shastri
11/20/2014

Gul-o-Gulzar is a lyrical celebration of Bollywood legend Gulzar to be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 @ 6pm at Diamond Middle School, 99 Hancock Street, Lexington, MA.

When I was asked to write the script for ‘Gul-o-Gulzar’ by Siraj Khan, I was simply thrilled.

From the black and white era of ‘Bandini’ to colorful ‘Kajra Re’ – Gulzar has covered the entire spectrum in the literary palette. His films, his songs, his stories have enriched the popular substrate of India for over 50 years. He just turned 80 and is still going strong.

From romance to comedy to politics, Gulzar has given us masterpieces such as Aandhi, Mausam, Meera, Angoor, and Maachis,. We know Ghalib through the eyes of Gulzar, and Hindi/Urdu world discovered Tagore through Gulzar. We owe much to this genius, so we decided to present Gul-o-Gulzar for Boston connoisseurs.

Gul-o-Gulzar features an all-star cast from New England, singing evergreen songs from Gulzar films, reciting his poetry, and enacting immortal scenes from his films.  Performing at the show would be well-known singers such as Sankar Gangaikondan, Meena Sundaram, Dilip Acharya, and Anuradha Palakurthi.

It is a musical drama with seasoned actors such as Ajay Jaisingh, Ajay Jain, and Nilay Mukherjee, and poets Sunayana Kachroo and Kumkum Mallik.

Most of the Gul-o-Gulzar team members have collaborated on memorable shows such as Rooh-e-Sahir and Raaga-Rang.

Siraj Khan the director of the show, said, “Gulzar is a gold-mine for the music lover, and we have designed the most enjoyable garden for the audience.”

“I grew up singing his songs and it is very special to be organizing such an event,” said Nayanika, producer.

“Gulzar is simply the most prolific Bollywood personality with an illustrious 50 –year career spanning 130 films, 20 Filmfare awards, 5 National awards, an Academy and Grammy award each,” said director Siraj Khan.

This special musical, poetic and dramatic feast for ears, eyes and spirit takes place on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Diamond Middle School, Lexington MA.

Gul-o-Gulzar is our offering to the versatile artist and also to discerning audiences that have made Boston a hub of creativity and entertainment.

I invite you to this show, which is certain to bring a smile and delight to your hearts. And you will be supporting a worthy cause - the net proceeds of the show will be for ongoing support of aging and forgotten musicians.
