"Kalakruti"- Art from Artists of Indian Origin
Lakeside Gallery
Sharon Adult Center, Sharon Community Center
October 8 - November 19, 2014

Featuring exotic art from the Southeast Asian Subcontinent - "Kalakruti" – which means “a creation of art, is a small group of artists of Indian origin who work in a variety of mediums and styles ranging from two-dimensional with watercolor, oil, enamel, acrylic, fabric, and glass surfaces and in 3D with ceramic, clay, resin and brass. The artists - Mridula Satyamurti, Prity Turkhia, Geeta Jakkaraju, Giri Pottepalem, Radha Jaldu, and Vasanthi Vemparla, whose styles “range from the very traditional Indian to the more local flavor of ‘our adoptive country’ try not to restrict themselves in their art. They usually meet at one another’s’ homes “exchanging ideas and keeping [each other] motivated.” They also hold workshops to learn from local artists and sometimes volunteer to help at non-profit events to raise funds for under-privileged children in India...

The artists’ statements about themselves draw us in and make us want to see what they are all about: Mridula Satyamurti, “an academician by profession and an amateur artist” shared, “I started drawing before I could write. Somehow life came in the way of my art and only a few years ago I got back to painting. I am now trying my hand at painting and resin and bronze sculptures.” Prity Turkhia told us “If I am asked to describe myself in one sentence, then it is ‘Art is my life’. I have a bachelor’s degree in Commerce along with Home Science and One-Stroke certifications. I mostly work with oils and acrylics on landscapes and get inspiration from nature to paint. I hope to continue learning to live through my passion for art.” Geeta Jakkaraju commented, “Since my childhood ‘ART’ has been my favorite hobby and I have been drawing and painting using various mediums - mainly oil colors and clay on canvas. In addition to being a Business Systems professional, I enjoy teaching art, conducting workshops for kids and trying my hand at big size 3D paintings.” Giri Pottepalem said, “A Software Engineer by profession and an amateur, self-taught art hobbyist by passion...my journey of Art began in my childhood inspired by my Dad. As life added more responsibilities, Art took a side part and it’s only recently that I have started experiencing it from my heart again. In one word art means ‘soul’ to me.” Radha Jaldu remarked, “As an artist everything that’s creative tickles me. Life falls short, for all the things that I would love to do. So I try to put my heart and soul in what I am passionate about and enjoy the journey, be it watercolors, oil painting, clay jewelry, dancing, photography, or just plain decorating the house. Part of my process before I begin painting is to read as much as I can so I can create the most satisfying art that is true to me. The challenges of course for me are balancing life between work, home, kids and creation. But I am glad that I have art on my side as it lets me see a whole new world every day.” And lastly, Vasanthi Vemparla shared with us, “From childhood I have been inspired to draw and paint with many items that were available at home, later got busy with many other things in life. Many years later my passion for art and a friend pulled me to work with watercolors, oils and acrylics. As a self-employed woman I create designs with Henna (Indian temporary tattoos) and enhancing my art knowledge with fabric and mixed mediums.”
