Melodies & Memories
Presenting the mother of all hit parades. Melodies & Memories is a geetmala of the best songs of each year from 1950 to 1975, often referred by music buffs as the golden era. So many of our memories are linked with these melodies, leaving an unalterable impact on our lives. Film music clearly took a very different turn after this era. Every generation brings with it its own share of luminaries. Looking at the pictures of the icons of the Indian cinema below, only Waheeda Rehman from the leading ladies and Dilip Kumar from the male stars are still amongst us today. In fact, we have lost Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand and Joy Mukherji recently all in quick succession. While we treasure the presence of Lata and Asha, the male singers have all gone, except Manna Dey (who turns 93 on May 1). Jagjit Singh's prematured death added to the agony. All the composers of the old guard have left us, except Khayyam and Anandji (of the Kalyanji-Anandji team). Composer Ravi passed away just last month and noted poet Shahryar (Umrao Jaan fame) just a month earlier in February. You will get a chance to revisit those unforgettable melodies, which need no introduction. The well-researched selection of songs will be presented by the very best and most popular of Boston's own talent in the vibrant space of performing arts. If you were present at the annual OP Nayyar Nites in Boston in the past years, the Geeta Dutt Nite in May 2011, and more recently, the spectacular Rooh-e-Sahir event last month, you would know who I am referring to. We do have a big cast indeed, all preparing to take you on an unforgettable trip, to unearth the time capsule. Most importantly perhaps, we will also be collectively paying homage to the iconic luminaries, who have given us so much of joy and spiritual nourishment in our lives.
Needless to say, this will not be a kid-friendly concert. Consequently, we would not be expecting any children under 10, accompanying their parents. The 10+ attending would require a full ticket as an adult.
