Celebrate the Artist! Pandit Chitresh Das, Kathak Dance Master, Innovator and Pioneer
Chhandika (the Chhandam Institute of Kathak Dance) and the Springstep Center for Dance host a celebration of the artistic and cultural contributions of Pandit Chitresh Das, recipient of a 2009 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Pandit Das will be the guest of honor at this thirty year retrospective, including video footage, of his traditional kathak solos and innovative choreography. He will speak about his life and his artistic process, leading up to his most recent India Jazz Suites production being presented by World Music in Boston April 30-May 2, 2010. He is first and foremost a master and virtuosic performer of the classical Kathak tradition. As a committed guru, he has trained many dancers who have gone on to establish their own careers in Kathak dance. Based on his concept of “innovation within tradition,†Pandit Das explores the boundaries of Kathak technique and performance, creating compelling, new works and techniques that are inventive, yet deeply rooted in the Kathak tradition. Pandit Das has also received numerous awards and grants for his contribution to Kathak Dance, including from the Olympic Arts Festival, National Dance Project, Rockefeller Foundation, Irvine Fellowships in Dance, among others.
