Farah Yasmeen Shaikh - Kathak
Kathak, a classical dance which traces its origins to the the nomadic bards of ancient Northern India, is a graceful, storytelling art form. In this evening of performance and demonstration, skilled Kathak dancer from San Francisco Farah Yasmeen Shaikh will perform the various elements of this dynamic tradition, including intricate footwork, rhythms, movement, and expression. She will share an innovation of her guru, renowned Kathak maestro Pandit Chitresh Das, known as Kathak Yoga, where the dancer recites rhythmic language while dancing contrasting complex patterns, then add a layer of instrumentation, by playing the harmonium and dancing. Joined by tabla artist Aditya Kalyanpur, disciple of the legendary late Ustad Allah Rakha Khan Sahib and Ustad Zakir Hussain, the evening will feature improvisation through rhythmic conversation between the dance and the music – truly the most exciting component of Indian classical art.
