2005 NCHD/UNDP Gala Event
The Gala Event 2005 is being organized to introduce and support the National Commission of Human Development (www.nchd.org.pk) from Pakistan. This commission was established by the government of Pakistan to address the need for poverty alleviation through education and primary healthcare in Pakistan’s rural and remote areas.

In the last three years (2002-2005) NCHD has made significant improvements in education and primary healthcare in Pakistan. Some of the highlights of its achievements are as follows:

o 1.5 million previously out-of-school children (5-7 years) are now receiving an education
o 9,121 community-based feeder schools opened
o Over 9,054 adult literacy centers opened (86% female learners).
o 19,000 teachers trained in enrollment dropout prevention and quality education
o 40,000 volunteers trained to ensure community participation in education and health programs at a grassroots level
o NCHD’s Primary Health Care, National ORS and School Health Programs make NCHD the largest health care provider outside the government
o 1.5 million women trained in preparation and usage of ORS all over Pakistan.
o Over 500,000 women and children have been vaccinated throughout Pakistan
o 1.1 million receive door-to-door health care on a monthly basis
o Under Microsoft’s Community Technology Learning Center Program (CTLC) 449 women and district government employees have been trained in computer skills in remote areas of country

The NCHD is supported in its efforts by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This branch of the United Nations acts as a global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. By working together, the NCHD and UNDP can work toward positive goals in a manner that is accountable, transparent and responsible.

In addition to UNDP, a number of international organizations have recognized the efforts of NCHD and have provided funding. Notable organizations include Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Microsoft, UNESCO, WHO, World Bank, Glaxo SmithKline, Coca Cola and Midas. We are expecting that a number of people included in this effort will be present at the gala. Nasim Ashraf, the Chairman of NCHD, will give an update on the organization. A representative of the UNDP will also be in attendance at the gathering.

This event will feature a Pakistani dinner and entertainment by nationally renowned Pakistani performer, Najam Sheraz (www.najamsheraz.com). All of this is being done to create awareness and raise funds in support of the NCHD. This gala is sponsored by ARY Digital Television channel and UNDP.
