Raaga-Taala: Indian Classical Dance and Music Event: Kathak Performance by Satyanarayan Charka and Troupe: Krishna Leela
Krishna Leela A dance drama directed & Choreographed by Pandit Satya Narayana Charka Part 1 : The first section of the program features elements of the Company?s versatile repertoire, including traditional Kathak compositions. Part 2 : ?Krishna Leela? Dance Drama Scene 1 ? Mischievous Boy Krishna is a charming little lad with sparkling eyes and a mischievous smile; enchanting his mother, Yashoda. The naughty little Krishna loves maakhan (cream-butter) and dahi (yoghurt). He goes with friends to the neighbor?s houses to steal maakhan. The gopis (milk maids) complain so many times to Yashoda that she loses her temper, but she knows that her Krishna is a good boy, even though he is mischievous. Scene 2 ? Kaliya Mardan One day Krishna comes to play on the bank of Kalindi Lake, the abode of Kaliya Naag, the king of poisonous serpents. While playing, the ball falls into the lake. Krishna leaps into the lake to fetch the ball, and the angry serpent king tries to bite him. Krishna defeats Kaliya, jumps onto his hood and performs the Kaliya Mardan Nritya. Scene 3 ? Holi Krishna is a bright young teenager. Along with springtime comes Holi, gay festival of colors. Radha, along with her friends, are playing with colored water. Krishna, Radha, and the gopis chase one another and pour color on each other using pichkaris (water pumps). Even their faces are full of colored powder. It is a day of merry-making. Scene 4 ? Radha and Krishna Radha and the gopis go to the bank of the Yamuna river to fetch water. Krishna comes and makes trouble for them, spilling their water. After a while, the gopis give up and leave with their pots. Radha stays with Krishna and they enjoy the dance of divine love. Scene 5 ? Raas Leela The full moon is the day the Raas dance is started. Shri Krishna, the Paramatman, dances in Vrindavan and the gopis dance around him in the Raas, which is called Raas Leela. Absorbed in the rhythmic trance of the dance, each gopi discovers simultaneously that Lord Krishna is dancing with her. The Paramatman (Supreme Consciousness) has drawn to Himself the jivas (individual souls), eliminating the separation created by maya and ignorance.
