A Terrible Beauty is Born, Musical Dance Performance in Khelkali
KhelKali is an experimental mix of Kathakali and Shakespeare. It uses the stories and text of Shakespeare and the style and theatricality of Kathakali to try and create a new authentic theatrical voice.
A Terrible Beauty is Born chronicles the life of a call center worker in an Indian metropolis. Arjun will present a perspective on the recent spurt in call centers in India within the context of the effects of a globalized economy.
About the performer - Arjun Raina has trained in Shakespearean studies at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) and has a decade of Kathakali apprenticeship to Guru Sadanan Balakrishnan. He is with the National School of Drama in New Delhi, India. More info on arjun is available at http://www.arjunraina.com/index.htm Arjun pioneered KhelKali, a form of dance theatre that takes its inspiration from Kathakali, but also frees itself from any limitations. This form has allowed other artists to join into a KhelKali performance, different kinds of percussionists, photographers, painters, singers, dancers. It has opened up a new space for improvisation and new work to happen within the power and beauty of a classical form like Kathakali. Through this format it has also been possible to comment on the contemporary political situation in India. A lot of these KhelKali performances take place in the mountain villages of Himachal Pradesh.
