India:Campaigning for Universal Access to Health Care
India has one of the most privatized health systems in the world, with government spending on health at a little over 1% of GDP. Along with this fragmentation, lack of standards, corruption and weak regulation have led to understaffed government hospitals with limited services and a mostly irrational and expensive private health sector. The result has been huge out-of-pocket expenses on health care and poor health outcomes in India. How are health rights activists addressing these issues and campaigning for better access to health care? This talk will provide a background, present some current issues of concern and discuss strategies and approaches adopted by the health movement in India. Sudha Nagavarapu is an activist based in Bangalore, India. She works on health rights with communities in Bangalore, other parts of Karnataka and in Sitapur district, UP. Sudha has co-authored a few studies looking at urban health systems, the privatization and commercialization of health services (with a focus on Karnataka), and access to medicines. She is currently involved in a study on referrals in maternal healthcare in Bangalore.
