MIT Talk: Successes in Struggles for Gender Equity in Rural India Association for India's Development MIT & Boston Chapters Presents MIT Talk: Successes in Struggles for Gender Equity in Rural India Ayesha Khatun, Social Activist, West Bengal, India WHEN: Wed, Jun 25, 2014 (7pm) WHERE: MIT, Bld 4, Room 231, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA Ayesha Khatun is the founder of MBBCDS (Mohammed Bazaar Backward Classes Development Society) in the Birbhum region in West Bengal, India. She works on various aspects of empowerment of tribal and minority women through socio-economic and cultural means. She is also an influential and powerful Bengali writer and has won prestigious accolades such as Rokeya Award, Young Writers Award and Ila Chand Award. The focus of her talk will be on the lived realities of marginalized Muslim, tribal and dalit women, inculcating a strong sense of leadership and developmental intervention using education and livelihood measures. This project is supported by the local Boston chapter and get to know more about the inspiring work that is happening in the grassroots. Association for India's Development is a volunteer movement promoting sustainable, equitable and just development. AID supports grassroots organizations in India and initiates efforts in various interconnected spheres such as agriculture, energy, education, health , livelihoods, natural resources including land and water, women's empowerment and social justice.
