Walk For Hunger

Suma Annand
04/25/2013

My name is Suma Anand and I am a senior at the Winsor School in Boston, MA. My name may be familiar to you all - I have written a few articles for Lokvani in the past about Indian culture and Sanskrit. On Sunday, May 5, 2013, I will participate in the Walk for Hunger as part of the Chinmaya Mission Boston Walkers team. Last year, our team had more than 300 walkers and raised over $33,643 dollars, making us the second highest fundraising team. I have done the Walk for Hunger before, many years ago, and I am incredibly excited to be participating in such a momentous community service event again!

I have been part of Chinmaya Mission since I was a kindergartner. I remember attending Balavihar in Bedford, MA, before the center in Andover was built. Then, it was a roomful of kids sitting on blankets brought from home. But the modest setting didn't make what we learned any less powerful. In fact, since kindergarten, Chinmaya has taught me indelible lessons about Hindu culture through Sanskrit verses, cultural practices, and spiritual Vedantic philosophy. I've enjoyed numerous dance and music events hosted at the center. Over the years, I've grown close to an incredibly warm, welcoming and tight-knit community that I am proud to be a part of.

However, despite attending Balavihar and cultural events often, I haven't spent much time giving back to the community. Chinmaya hosts community service events, but I've always had an excuse - homework, studying for tests, being too busy. Now, I'd like to change that and support Chinmaya Mission by joining the Chinmaya Mission Boston Walkers team in the Walk for Hunger. The Walk for Hunger, a 20-mile walk through the Greater Boston area, raises money for anti-hunger programs and promotes awareness about the issue of hunger. This year, my goal is to walk at least 10 miles and raise $250. Please support me and my team in our collective goal of raising $15,000! Every dollar helps.
