Sharon Diwali Celebrations – Cultural show 2012

The Indian American association of Sharon held it’s annual  Cultural show in celebration of Diwali at Mansfield High school on Oct 27th 2012.

About  475 residents of Sharon, Ma attended the event, attired in traditional and festive Indian finery.

The evening began with a simple ‘pooja’ and ‘aarti’ or prayer offering and was followed by a two and a half hour show filled with song and dance.  One hundred and forty two children between the ages of 5 and 18 and twelve ladies kept the audience enthralled with their performances which covered the gamut from traditional Bharatanatyam to hip hop to glitzy Bollywood numbers to the captivatingly colorful Gujarati folk dance to the unique and creatively costumed  and choreographed  Nutcracker based item ( Night at the Doll Museum).  There was also a call to save the planet  woven into one of the items! Talented volunteer teachers spent countless hours in putting the show together.   The program was skillfully emceed by Sharon High school seniors.

During dinner which was catered by Hot Breads, folks had an opportunity to mingle, socialize and catch up with friends and acquaintances.  As one person put it,” it is a much anticipated evening because we get a chance to meet people we otherwise would not have an opportunity to meet during the course of the year.  With busy lives and expanding social circles, it is impossible to meet all our fellow Sharon residents unless there is an event such as this”

Namaste – a coveted coffee table book and the program publication - was a compilation of artwork, pictures from past events, interesting articles and recipes and advertisements by businesses and supporters that help defray the cost of the evening.

Every aspect of the evening  was coordinated by a group of volunteers and spearheaded by Surabhi Agnihotri,  President of the Indian American Association of Sharon for the year 2012. Latha Raman was the vice-president. Under their leadership, a summer picnic had also been organized on July 14th, 2012

In it’s 30th year of existence,  Sharon Diwali  has grown from humble beginnings to the current dual evening extravaganza ;  in addition to the Cultural show , there is  another evening planned for the 23rd of November, where guests will enjoy a formal sit down dinner followed by dancing to the sounds of a DJ
