With fabulous desi fusion décor by Alankar Decors, music by DJ Yogz, the Peabody Essex museum was transformed into a happening party space where a largely mainstream Americans were having a great Desi style dance party. The event was held on Saturday, May 9th 2015.

“Our interest in India and Bollywood started when we were invited to a Sikh wedding in New York. The family was so very warm and welcoming. They encouraged us to take part in all the ceremonies. We brought these fabulous scarves and jewelry for the wedding and did not have a chance to wear it after. When we heard of the PEM event we decided to come and relieve that wonderful experience” said Amanda and Deborah who were Salem residents

The video screen showed several Indian movie scenes while the participants were rocking to the beat of the Dhol. “It is a wonderful event to welcome non-Indians into learning a little about India. I really creating the right ambience for the event” said Shobha Shastry whose company Alankar Decors had provided all the decorations.

There were several non-Indian origin dancers who danced beautifully to “DHoli Taro”. “I have danced in college with Indian friends and thus know the song well” said Julie.

For some it was just nice to be able to dance at the PEM instead of in a bar. “This is a clean and beautiful space and hence we love to come to this party each year”.  People had donned very creative costumes representing their idea of “Indian-ness”. Hair ornaments, toe rings, bindis, clothing wrapped around in creative fashion and bells were all part of the costumes one saw in the group.

Whether it was to take a picture on a lovely Indian style sofa or to dance the night away to Bollywood music, PEM was certainly the place to be  if you wanted a party Desi style. Do not miss this event next year!
